QUICK MEANING
The Ace of Cups comes into your life with a cascade of love. Imagine it pouring over you and filling you up. What are you going to do with this gift of love?
CARD DESCRIPTION
We see a hand coming out of the clouds. The hand is holding gently in its palm a yellow cup. Above the cup, a bird holds a sacred wafer in its mouth. From the cup flows water which falls to a pond below. In the pond are plants and far in the background is land.
SYMBOLS
Hand
The hand of the Creator giving you a gift. Hold that gift gently and allow yourself to feel it.
Clouds
Represents the divinity behind the gift.
Cup
The yellow cup represents the vessel of life – the womb from which all life comes. In Wicca / Witchcraft the cup is seen as a symbol of the archetypal feminine. In fact the element of water (Cups) is also seen as feminine.
Bird
The bird is a dove which is a symbol of peace and love. Our emotions have the ability to heal the world and bring world peace.
Wafer in Birds Mouth
The dove holds in its mouth a wafer which represents the communion wafer of the Christian religion. The wafer is seen as a symbol of the Body of Christ and his ability to be reborn. We too can feel reborn when we are full of love and positive emotions.
The letter W or Reversed M
The letter W can represent Water. Reversed it looks like an M which can represent Mem, the Hebrew letter that is associated with water.
Flowers
The flowers are lotuses. The lotus was a very important symbol in Ancient Egypt representing sacredness and healing. The Ace of Cups reminds us we have within us great potential for self healing.
Pond
The water represents the place of the unconscious, dreams and potential. When we work with the Ace of Cups and the Cups suit we have the opportunity to work with our unconscious and dream world.

GOLDEN DAWN / QABALA
The Hermetic title for this card is ‘The Root of the Powers of Water’.
There are four Kabbalistic worlds which are the way energy becomes more physical. Water resides within the world of Briah which is seen as the creative world.
On the Tree of Life, the Aces sit at the top on the Sephirah called Kether which is Hebrew for Crown. This is the first place where the creative force of the Creator comes into focus on its steps to manifestation. The color traditionally associated with 1’s on the Tree of Life is White and Brilliance.
ASTROLOGICAL
The Aces can rule a season. There are many ways to attribute an Ace to a season.
I prefer seeing Cups as the Autumn.
You can decide what makes more sense to you or if its important for you.
OPEN HEART
If you like to learn by doing then I invite you to try the Open Heart Meditation which I came across years ago when I studied with the Padmacahaya Institute and it changed my life. When you do this exercise you are allowing the Ace of Cups to enter into your heart.
WHEN THE ACE OF CUPS IS REVERSED
Oh yuck! I hate when I get the Ace of Cups reversed. All that amazing love and I cannot access it!
When we cannot access the love and it is not flowing it is often blocked because of our negative emotions, pain, grief and past regrets. It can feel very unsafe to open our hearts and let in love again. We ask for a soul mate but do not want to risk getting hurt again – we thus tell the universe we are not ready for love.
Two important questions to consider with a reversed Ace of Cups:
What is blocking you from receiving uber amounts of love today?
Why are you not allowing yourself to feel.
