Court Cards can be tricky to learn. I was so confused at the beginning when I picked up a Tarot Deck. Court cards always left me a blank until I learned an important lesson. So, here are my Top Tips to understanding the Court Cards.
Court cards are ruled by the four elements of earth, air, fire and water. Each element matches a suit of the Minor Arcana in the Tarot deck. Each element also has a number of attributes associated with them.
EARTH = PENTACLES = HOME, FAMILY, BUSINESS, WORK, MONEY
AIR = SWORDS = MIND, THOUGHTS, INTELLECT, LEARNING
FIRE = WANDS = ENERGY, ADVENTURE, ACTION, CREATIVITY, ENTREPRENEUR
WATER = CUPS = EMOTIONS, LOVE, HEALING
In the Court cards we see four groups of people. Each group has a Page, Knight, Queen and King. Each group is ruled by one of the four elements mentioned above.
PAGE = YOUTH, IMMATURE, BEGINNINGS, INNOCENCE, EXCITEMENT
KNIGHT = ADVENTURE, ENERGY, PASSION, MISSION, GOAL, RESTLESS
QUEEN = FEMININE, NURTURING, COMPASSION, EMOTION ORIENTATED
KING = RATIONAL, LOGICAL, FOCUSED, GOAL ORIENTATED
So Pentacles (ruled by the element earth) will have a:
PAGE OF PENTACLES
KNIGHT OF PENTACLES
QUEEN OF PENTACLES
KING OF PENTACLES
You do not have to be confused by the Court Cards.
The easiest way to understand them is to see them as an ENERGY.
When you see a Court Card, ask yourself: What ‘level’ of energy is this card?
A PAGE WILL HAVE A YOUTHFUL INNOCENT ENERGY
A KNIGHT WILL HAVE A RESTLESS ENERGY WHERE THEY HAVE A QUEST OR MISSION
A QUEEN WILL HAVE A MATURE FEMININE ENERGY
A KING WILL HAVE AN EQUALLY MATURE BUT MALE ENERGY
A Page of Pentacles will therefore have the youthful energy of a Page and is ruled by the element Earth. He will be earthy as the element ruling the card is earth and he might be excited, full of energy and childlike.
The mistake people often make is to think that a Page must be a child, a Knight must be a teenager or young adult and a King and Queen must be mature adults. However if we see the Court cards as an energy, we do not have to stick to those stereotypes.
A Page could be an excited 82 year old woman about to do her first pottery class. A King could be an incredibly mature 14 year old girl or boy who is very responsible.
Always think of energy. If you think of energy then the Court Cards are much easier to understand.
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF THE COURT CARD REPRESENTS A PERSON, SITUATION OR AN ACTION?
Easy! The answer comes from the question.
If you ask about a person, the court card will tell you about that person. If you ask about a situation in the past, a court card can tell you the energy of that situation. If you ask about when a future event will occur, the court card can tell you the month in which it may fall.

Matilda hears voices. She listens to the voices and often runs around naked. The voices in her head tell her to cover herself with leaves and grass and she does what she is told.
What element rules Matilda?
This is Mary. She is a Naturopath by profession. Her passion is helping women to get pregnant. She uses her intuition most of the time to recommend medicines, even though she has a lot of medical training. She often asks women about their dreams as Mary feels it can tell her a lot about the healing process.
What element rules Mary?
Aakar is 10 years old and an orphan. He is also a Buddhist monk. He is incredibly mature for his age and already helps the younger children. He is already exuding gentle healing energy and tells everyone that life is meaningless without the heart.
What element rules Aakar? What court card is he?
This is Nancy. She is a secretary to a wealthy business man. Nancy is professional, serious and never late for anything.
She has a strict routine every morning before she leaves the house. For e.g. she always leaves at 7.05 am to get the 7.20 train into the city.
She loves to read and is an introvert and if you get her to talk it will be extremely intellectual.
Nancy also teaches in the evenings at the local collage and also has a lot of responsibility in setting up the new curriculum.
Nancy is not in a relationship – in fact being emotional is hard for her.
Nancy is obviously an Air Sign but what court card is she – page, knight, queen or king?
Candy is a real cutie. She lives in the country side with her parents and is never at home. She is always wandering around exploring the nature. She is studying in high school really hard and wants to study botany in university. Her greatest joy is to be outside getting her hands dirty in the soil.
What Court Card is Candy?
Amir is a super charmer. All the women are crazy about him. Amir loves the attention and knows exactly what to say. He starts relationships but he can never stay in them long. He gets bored and wants to go on the next adventure. He feels he has a mission but is not sure yet exactly what that is. He breaks women’s hearts all the time and it is terrible to say it but he does not really care.
What court card is Amir?
This is Polly. She is four years old and is not scared of anything – even this hairy cow called Bob. Bob is a very moody cow so it is quite courageous of Polly to get so close. If her mother knew Polly was having a conversation with Bob, she would probably pass out on the spot.
Polly is a cute kid but finds it hard to go to sleep. She has so much energy. She is always asking ‘why’?
She is very passionate and affectionate and her favorite game is dressing up
What court card is Polly?
Lucy is a darling. She is very excited because her Mammy is going to have a baby soon. Lucy loves playing mammy and giving her dolls breast milk. Lucy says that when she grows up she will be a mammy also.
Lucy is also very very stubborn. She knows what she wants and she is like a rock – she will not budge!
What court card is Lucy?
Matilda is ruled by the element of Air. She hears voice in her head. The mental state is ruled by Air.
Mary is ruled by the element of Water. Water rules healing, therapy and compassion.
Aakar is ruled by the element of Water. He focuses on his heart and compassion. Aakar could be a King or Queen due to his maturity but I lean more towards a King due to his rationality and fathering qualities. Aakar is a King of Cups.
Nancy is ruled by the element of Air. She is totally in her mind. She is mature and responsible so could be either a King or Queen. I choose King as she tends to avoid her emotions and stick to rational and logical facts. She is a King of Swords.
Candy is ruled by the element of earth. She is a Knight becasue she has a mission with her study to be a botonist. She is a Knight of Pentacles
Amir is ruled by the element of Fire. He is a romeo and very passionate. He is a Knight becasue he is restless and cannot commit in any relationship. He is still too restless and eager for adventure. He is a Knight of Wands.
Polly is ruled by the element of Fire. She is full of energy and spark and has lots of courage. She is a Page because she is young, innocent and naive. An adult may not get that close to an animal of that size. She is a Page of Wands.
Lucy is ruled by the element of earth. She is very practical and likes to ‘do’ things. She wants to be a Mammy when she grows up but she is obviously still a little girl with her own stubborn tantrums. She is a Page. Page of Pentacles.
